Tenochtitlan is an Aztec City built on a lake, an island city. Its agriculture was based on chinampas, "narrow, rectangular beds or platforms, which are constructed by alternating layers of lake mud and thick mats of decaying vegetation (cespedes) o ver shallow lake bottoms, or in marshy zones" (Calnek 105).
